Khiva (in today's Uzbekistan) was an ancient trading post/oasis on the Silk Road. The inner town of the old Khiva oasis - Itchan Kala - is encircled by walls up to 10 m/33 ft high, dating from the 10th century. It is site of many amazing architectural ensembles. Itchan Kala is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Historic Centre of Bukhara is listed as UNESCO World heritage Site: "Bukhara, which is situated on the Silk Route, is more than 2,000 years old. It is the most complete example of a medieval city in Central Asia, with an urban fabric that has remained largely intact. Monuments of particular interest include the famous tomb of Ismail Samani, a masterpiece of 10th-century Muslim architecture, and a large number of 17th-century madrasas." Samarkand was one of the major stops on Silk Road. In the 14th century it became the capital of the Timurid empire (founded by Tamerlane/Timur), and one of the most important and beautiful cities in Central Asia.
