The Roman emperor Diocletian built the palace between 295 and 305 CE for his retirement. The Diocletian's palace is one of the best preserved roman buildings from late antiquity, its ruins are in the central area of the city of Split in Croatia.

The residents of the area since the 7th century transformed the palace into a town by building and incorporating their homes into the old walls, columns and structures. Today the ruins and the historic buildings are in an inhabited part of the city, intermixed with shops, restaurants, and houses.
